Big Tech's unchecked expansion is coming at the expense of our communities
Imagine waking up tomorrow to find your town has one year to replace its only source of electricity. For the residents of Lake Tahoe, that nightmare is becoming a reality.[1]
In March, the California Public Utilities Commission learned that a longtime supplier, NV Energy, could no longer power the Tahoe region. The reason? An explosion of Big Tech data centers across the Nevada desert, creating an unprecedented drain on the grid.[1]
Tahoe is not an isolated case. Communities in western Texas, upstate New York, and northern Virginia are facing the same threat.[2] If Big Tech's unchecked expansion continues, strained grids, soaring energy bills, and outright power restrictions will affect all of us — not someday, but soon.
In 38 states, communities have successfully secured temporary bans or halts on data center construction.[3] From Denver, Oklahoma City, and Seattle’s one-year moratoriums to Huron County, Michigan’s three-year pause, towns and cities nationwide are successfully standing up against corporate land grabs and resource hoarding.[3] Organized action is effectively holding Big Tech accountable.
Take action now: Tell your state and local officials to stand with community organizers and protect our resources before Big Tech leaves us in the dark.
